BACK TO MY ROOTS
KEVIN LUCHMUN TELLS US ABOUT LIVING IN THE PRESENT AND REFLECTING ON HOW FAR HE’S COME
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
My first job was on the meat and fish counter at Sainsbury’s.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE ON A CAREER IN THE INDUSTRY?
I saw it as a fun and creative way to make money. It was also a social thing for me, I enjoyed working with people and being in an environment with likeminded people. Every day is different!
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started barbering when I was at college. I’ve always had a shaved head, so that meant I always had my own pair of clippers. One of my friends wanted his hair cut so I started cutting his hair and then I started cutting other friends’ hair - and the journey started from there.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE?
The biggest challenge was during the pandemic. The majority of my work involves international travel so when Covid-19 happened I had to revisit my business model and switch things online. I ended up getting my own studio in London where I can be creative and bring my ideas to life.
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
Reflect on how far you have come. Sometimes we get distracted and frustrated at what’s happening right now, but we have to take a step back. It’s about the journey and enjoying each step.
WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU’D KNOWN THEN THAT YOU KNOW NOW?
Nothing. I feel like if my mindset was different to what it is now, I wouldn’t be where I am now. I’m grateful for every opportunity I’ve had and every setback I’ve had. One important thing about life is learning and progressing in anything we do.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR?
Without a doubt, my son Theodore.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR YOU NOW?
I always think about this quote: “If you want to be happy, do not dwell in the past, do not worry about the future, focus on living fully in the present. Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength. No amount of regretting can change the past, and no amount of worrying can change the future.” I try not to worry about the future. As long as my family and friends are happy and I’m working towards the things I enjoy then I’m happy with that.
