THE INTERVIEW
IN THIS ISSUE’S THE INTERVIEW, MODERN BARBER’S ALL ROUND BARBER 2025, JOVARAS MAZRIMAS TALKS ABOUT HIS INSPIRATIONS AND PASSIONS
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND, WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A BARBER?
Barbering wasn’t something I wanted to do as a child, I started cutting hair later in life. The first barbershop I worked in was in Preston, and that’s where everything really started for me. Coming from Lithuania, where the barbering culture hadn’t fully developed yet, the idea of being a barber wasn’t something I grew up with. But once I experienced the craft in the UK, I instantly connected with it. I was drawn to the creativity, the precision, and the personal connection you build with clients. It quickly became a passion and a new path for me.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF BARBERING?
My style is quite wide – from soft, shaggy shapes to sharp, clean fades. It’s all about individualism and tailoring the cut to suit each client’s personality and lifestyle. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all; every haircut is a reflection of the person sitting in the chair.
WHERE DO YOU THINK YOUR PASSION FOR HAIR COMES FROM?
My passion comes from everything around me – fashion, movies, music, and the streets. I get inspired by style and culture in all forms. I feed that passion by staying curious, always observing trends, and bringing those influences into my work behind the chair.
CONGRATULATIONS, YOU WERE RECENTLY NAMED MODERN BARBER ALL ROUND BARBER – HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN YOUR NAME WAS ANNOUNCED?
It was a surreal moment! From the first time I held Modern Barber magazine, winning something like this became a goal. Hearing my name announced felt like everything had come full circle – years of hard work, passion, and commitment finally recognised on a big stage. I put a lot of effort into my entry to showcase a versatile collection, from different shapes to various hair textures and colour work. I wanted to promote the full spectrum of what modern barbering can offer. Also, having a passion for photography really helped me present my work in a strong, creative way that stood out visually.
WHAT DO YOU DO THAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT IN AN EVER-CHANGING INDUSTRY?
I have a strong understanding of hair products, which helps me tailor each look perfectly. My consultations go beyond the surface of ‘what do you want today’. I really take time to understand my client’s needs and lifestyle. Hair photography is also a big part of my life; I work on cover shoots and collections with my fellow hairdressers, which pushes me creatively and helps me showcase my work in a unique way.
YOU’RE AN INSPIRATION FOR MANY BARBERS, WHO INSPIRES YOU?
I draw inspiration from people like Joe Mills, Jody Taylor, Charlie Cullen, and Tariq Howes. These barbers are masters of their craft and constantly push the boundaries of creativity and technique. Their dedication and ability to innovate within the industry motivate me to keep evolving my own skills and style.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN TEN YEARS TIME?
In ten years, I want to continue to be an artist on the Modern Barber stage, sharing my knowledge and experience. My goal is to teach young talent not just haircutting, but also photography skills, helping them grow creatively and professionally.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE BARBERING INDUSTRY THAT YOU LOVE?
What I love most is the sense of community and the constant opportunity for growth. It’s a place where you’re always learning, evolving, and connecting with others who share the same passion.
SO, WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR JOVARAS MAZRIMAS?
I recently moved to the coast and I’m excited to be opening my own shop in Worthing. I’ll be working between London’s Woolf Kings X and Worthing, building a small team where I can share my knowledge and skills. I also plan to keep representing and contributing to the barber community by participating in events and inspiring others.
