HOW CAN I MAKE A NAME FOR MYSELF IN THE INDUSTRY?

How can barbers in the early stages of their career take the next steps to success? An industry expert weighs in

CHARLOTTE FIRMAN, BARBER AT BLAKES GROOMING

“i’ve been barbering for three years so I’m still fairly new to the game. I think the barbering scene is at a really exciting point right now and there is a lot more I want to learn and show. I’ve just started entering barbering competitions and I am trying to build an online presence. When you were at a similar stage in your career, how did you level up to the next stage, find your way in the industry and make a name for yourself?”

CARL BLAKE, BLAKES GROOMING

“the industry as a whole has changed considerably in the last 20 years, but one thing that hasn’t changed is that to make a name for yourself you have to work very hard at it. There are no short cuts in our line of work (if you’ll pardon the pun!)

Nowadays, we have new tools at our disposal, most notably social media. But use social platforms wisely and be wholly honest about your level of skill. I think other industry people appreciate an honest barber on social media rather than a Photoshopped one.

I would also say go to as many industry events and exhibitions as possible, to see some of the trade-leading barbers show their skills in person. Also, don’t be shy to ask them any questions you may have. I don’t think I have ever seen a colleague refuse to answer any questions anyone has approached them with. Also, being at these events really contributes to keeping your passion for the industry at a high level. Generally, everyone comes away from an exhibition or a hair show having been inspired in some way.

It’s also very important to make sure you work on a daily basis for the right company. Working for a company that has the right structure in place is paramount to the progress you make in your career; a company that can recognize your potential and push you forward and not hold you back.

Lastly, you mentioned competitions. In my opinion entering competitions is a great way to move yourself to that next level, no matter if you win or not, the experience you will gain from being in the studio and putting yourself under pressure to produce your best work for just one photograph, will help you progress through the rest of your career.”
