RHR MALE GROOMING 25 UPPER AUGHTON ROAD, BIRKDALE SOUTHPORT
WHEN DID YOU OPEN?
The opening of the shop was in fact 14 April 2020, but because the pandemic hit we had to hold off until 4 July 2020. It was a tough time for our industry but we are going from strength-to-strength now we are in full swing.
HOW WAS THE RENOVATION PROCESS? WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE?
The shop renovation was a slow progress. I’d signed on the dotted line only weeks before lockdown hit. I’d spent months on the planning and decor but it had to be put on hold. I had been collecting from antique dealers and various suppliers for so long too. I won’t lie, I did start to panic...
WHAT WAS YOUR BUDGET FOR THE INTERIOR?
The budget equated to around £15k for the interior. We wanted to keep the vintage feel but add a bit of an edge as we cater for very young, as well as more mature, gentlemen.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THE SPACE?
My favourite thing about the space is the 1920s tan leather chair that sits by the entrance door (it was a gift from a true gent!). It is a firm favourite with everyone as you can relax in the window with a coffee. It really does feel like you’ve gone back in time, especially with a retro playlist on in the background.
WHAT INFLUENCED THE INTERIOR DESIGN OF YOUR SALON?
My late grandad was my inspiration for the interior of RHR Male Grooming. He was a military inspector and always looked the part. His LP records are proudly placed on the main wall, which include a mix of Frank Sinatra, Matt Monroe and Bing Crosby. The name was also inspired by him, Roland Henry Roberts (RHR) Male grooming. I’ve been a barber for 26 years so it was a proud moment when the sign went up!
WHAT MAKES THE SPACE UNIQUE?
RHR brings a vintage male grooming experience into modern times. We have a relaxed, unique atmosphere inside the shop, but maintain a very high professional standard. The space allows all of our gentlemen to relax and enjoy their time throughout the whole service.
DO YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS OR THINGS YOU WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY IF YOU HAD TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN?
I definitely have no regrets, the only thing I’d do differently is not open in the middle of a pandemic!
