STEP INTO THE FUTURE
Welcome to the latest issue of Modern Barber magazine.
As we enter the final quarter of the year and head into 2025, the barbering industry continues to solidify the growth and recognition it has achieved over the past 12 months. From large-scale events such as The Modern Barber Awards and Barber Connect - where the industry came together to celebrate its successes - to expert barbers sharing their knowledge with the hairdressing industry (you can read our interview with the barbers offering training at modernbarber.co.uk), it’s clear that barbering’s place in the wider hair industry is evolving.
However, as the industry’s reputation rises, it’s impossible to ignore the challenges many are facing - rising costs, staff shortages, and the ongoing need to adapt. In this issue we explore the barbershops and independent barbers that are finding innovative ways to weather the storm. Whether it’s streamlining workflows, automating tasks, or re-evaluating business hours and downsizing, our Software Special on page 27 dives into the pros and cons of various business models and shows how technology can support your business.
I also took a trip to London’s Soho to catch up with Modern Barber’s Business Leader of the Year, Bobby Gordon (page 10). He shared his insights into what makes a strong business leader and the lessons he’s learned along the way. Meanwhile, in our 10-Minute Chat (page 60) with Community Hero Joe Steven of OS Lifestyle, we had an honest discussion about business ownership with a sustainable mindset. And on page 40, I got on the phone to chat to Andy Dawson in Aberdeen, about his All Round Barber win and the (very) quick business decisions he had to make when launching SIGMA Male Image.
Elsewhere, we spoke with expert barbers about their top electrical tools and the trending looks you can create with them. So, whether you’re an apprentice or a seasoned barber looking for fresh inspiration, we’ve got you covered on page 32 – who said there was no room for creativity in barbering?
Finally, if you’re looking to see out the year with three days of networking, check out page 20 for all the brands, barbers and product launches you can expect at this year’s Salon International at ExCeL London, 12-14 October.
Thank you for being part of the Modern Barber community for another year -I hope you find plenty of motivation and inspiration in this issue to take with you into 2025. See you soon!
