ZANEAR BARBER TALKS SHAGGY LOOKS, BILLY RAY CYRUS, AND FINDING THE EXTRAORDINARY IN THE ORDINARY…

Often we encounter great ideas or inspiration from others, but hesitate to act on them fearing they’re not entirely our own. Embracing the concept of taking inspiration and putting our own spin on things can lead to remarkable outcomes.

Zanear’s work

SIX THINGS THAT ARE INSPIRING ME RIGHT NOW

THE HAIR INDUSTRY

Talented artists in our industry are a boundless source of inspiration and motivation. I’m particularly drawn to the work of other artists – especially really creative hairdressers.

FASHION

I draw a lot of inspiration from runway shows and streetwear as they often showcase cutting-edge styles and innovative trends. Virgil Abloh is one designer whose visionary approach to design, and his ability to blend streetwear with high fashion, has had a profound impact on me.

SKATEBOARDING

The hairstyles in the skateboarding industry reflect a laid-back vibe, with long shaggy looks that appear effortlessly natural. Over the past five/six years there’s been a resurgence of this relaxed aesthetic.

SELF-FREEDOM

In my latest collection ‘Flowers and Beauty’, I found inspiration in the simplicity of everyday things that are often overlooked. By allowing my imagination to flow freely, I’ve created something extraordinary, showcasing the beauty in the ordinary.

CELEBS

When the mullet came back, I researched into the celebrities that rocked this style and came across Billy Ray Cyrus and his 80s mullet – I love the strong flat top and long textured layers. I replicated the same cut and I’m enamoured by the result.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media has made inspiration available with just one click – I recently discovered an artist on Instagram who crafts patterns on the beach with stones. This inspired me to incorporate similar elements into my latest collection.
